Who is the course for?

The course is ideal for you if you are thinking about teaching as a career particularly if you are considering a career change enforced or otherwise. You can also apply if you are a newly qualified graduate.

What will the course involve?

You will participate in one tutored day, 1 full day in a school in your preferred age arrange or secondary subject and a third day which will include a debrief session and tutorials. The third day will help guide you with the next steps to take.

*NB Unless otherwise requested, school placements will be arranged with schools close to participants’ homes.

How long is each tutored day?

You will required to attend the tutored days which will generally be held between 10 a.m. and 4p.m.

What hours will I work on the placement day?

You will be required to attend a complete school day; actual times will be given when the school is determined.

What will I learn?

You will learn about the different teacher training routes available and application procedures. You will gain some understanding about whole school curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment, roles and responsibilities of members of the school community. You will learn about the career structure, the support, pay and conditions of employment.

What will I receive at the end of the course?

All those completing a Teaching Taster Course will receive a Certificate of Attendance that they can show to a training provider when they are applying for a course of Initial Teacher Training. Additionally, you will be given a Training Entry Profile (TEP) form which gives you the opportunity to record any prior experiences and achievements that might better prepare you for teacher training, and relate these to the standards for Qualified Teacher Status.

Are any phases of education or subjects given priority?

SECONDARY TEACHING

This course is aimed at finding potential teachers of SHORTAGE SUBJECTS – these being Science, Mathematics, English, Drama, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Design and Technology, Information & Communication Technology and Religious Education – but other subjects are also welcomed.

PRIMARY TEACHING

This course is aimed at finding potential teachers to train as primary teachers but with a particular focus of attracting MEN interested in teaching in the primary phase.

In addition to the specific foci of these courses, the TDA are very keen to attract participants from all groups currently Under Represented in the Teaching Profession (including potential Minority Ethnic or Disabled Trainees).

What must I do now?

You MUST obtain a Reference No from the Training and Development Agency for Schools Agency (TDA) “Teaching Information Line”:

How much does it cost?

You do not pay to attend the course however, a refundable deposit of £50 per person, is payable to register for the place. Cheques are to be made payable to EM Direct. This deposit is only returned on full completion of all 3 days of the course. A ‘no refund’ policy, to cover administrative costs, operates once the deposit has been paid - except if the course has to be cancelled by EM Direct due to unforeseen circumstances.

You need to complete the application form included in this pack and forward it to EM Direct, with your course deposit.

How many places are there on the course?

There is a maximum of 30 places available on each course. These courses are very popular so early application is advised. Places cannot be issued to those already registered on Initial Teacher Training courses. In the event of over subscription a selection process will take place and those interested in teaching in the shortage subject areas will be given priority.

We are confident these courses will provide you with all the relevant information you need to help you decide whether you could be a teacher and make a valuable contribution to the education of children in the schools of today and of the future.
