The Student Associate Scheme is a Training and Development Agency for schools (TDA) funded programme to give students, while studying, the opportunity to work in a school alongside teachers, enabling them to get a taste of the classroom. EM Direct has been running this programme for the TDA since 2003 and has successfully placed many hundreds of students. For 2009/2010 we have 156 places available.
The scheme is open to students registered on a part-time or full-time programme leading to the award of BA/BSc degree, postgraduate degree, HND or Foundation Degree.
Participating students work in Primary or Secondary schools under the guidance of a mentor. The programme is flexible to fit round University studies. Students are given a training and induction programme to prepare them for working with young people. You will then spend fifteen days in a school working alongside experienced teachers and assisting them in classroom teaching. Guided by them you will gain experience of how to work with pupils in the classroom. You will develop new skills and contribute to helping raise the attainment and aspirations of young people in school and gain firsthand experience of what a career in teaching involves.
We are currently recruiting students who are at university in any of the following areas: Lincoln, Leicester/Leicester – De Monfort, Loughborough, Hull, Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesborough, Durham, Leeds or York , but we are also able to consider applications from other areas and universities.
We are especially looking for students with:
Secondary Shortage Subjects:
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Modern Foreign Languages
- Design Technology
- ICT
- Music
- RE
- English (including Drama)
- Dance
There are no costs to the student. Students receive £40 per completed day x 15 days = £600. Participating schools receive £15 per completed day.
