Why should I attend?

Attending the course will provide academic challenge. As well as gaining an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subject you will also improve your pedagogical skills. The programme will further develop teachers in meeting the requirements of the 'Professional Standards for Teachers', in particular the Core and Post Threshold Standards.

What Qualification will I gain?

Attending the course will enhance your confidence and effectiveness in teaching Mathematics giving you the potential to make a significant contribution to an improvement in pupil performance and attainment in Mathematics.

On successful completion of the course you will:

  • gain a Certificate in Advanced Educational Studies (CAES) (40 Honours Level Credits) in the teaching of Mathematics, validated by York St John University. There will also be an opportunity to APL some of the credits gained to use towards a Masters Degree in Educational Improvement, Development and Change, and
  • be eligible to receive a £5,000 bursary from the TDA (only available to teachers employed in a Local Authority Maintained Secondary or Special School, or an Academy).

What much does the course cost?

If you are employed in a Local Authority Maintained Secondary or Special School, or an Academy, this course is fully funded by the TDA and is, therefore, FREE FOR PARTICIPANTS. There is also Supply Cover Funding of up to £6,000 (40 days at £150 per day - TDA standard national rate) available for your school to enable you to attend. Schools reclaim this amount from EM Direct.

If you are employed in an Independent School or a Further Education College, you will have to pay the full course fee of £2,000 plus VAT. No funding for supply cover is available to the Independent or FE sector.

How long is the course?

The course is 40 days

  • 30 days will be predominantly direct tutor-led workshop style sessions and
  • 10 days will be devoted to in-school development and other developmental activities.

The course commences in June 2010 starting with a 5 day intensive block.

The remaining 25 days tutored input will be distributed across the 3 terms (Sept 2010 - July 2011) on the basis of 8 to 9 whole days per term on a regular day each week to mitigate disruption in school. There will be no formal sessions at weekends or in school holidays.

Where is the course being held?

All tutored sessions are being held at York St John University, 9.30am to 3.30pm.
