Higher Level Teaching Assistants are experienced teaching assistants who plan and deliver learning activities under the direction of a teacher and assess, record and report on pupils’ progress. They may also manage other classroom-based staff or may supervise a class in a teacher's absence.
The HLTA programme is available to school support staff in England, who have sought the support of their headteacher.
There are potentially four steps to achieving HLTA status, which are:
- applying for funding
- training
- preparation for assessment
- assessment
ARE YOU READY FOR HLTA?
Use the EMHLTA Training Needs Analysis Form to check where you are.
To be eligible to apply for funding you must already be working in a school and have the support of your headteacher.
The TDA funds the HLTA programme through local authorities. If you work in a maintained school you should normally be eligible for funding through your LA. To apply you should contact your LA to ascertain their application process and requirements.
Training involves developing your skills, knowledge and experience to the level required by the HLTA professional standards. Your training needs will be assessed by your local authority in consultation with your school.
If you do need training you'll find some aspects of your training will differ from that of other candidates, as it will be tailored to your specific training needs. The training you receive may include development activities in your school or through other training activities.
