Course Outline

The training programme is highly structured and includes generic as well as subject training. There is a major focus on subject knowledge development, delivered by EM Direct and by school-based trainers. All sessions are mandatory without exception.

All Trainees

The Generic part of the training Programme is delivered by the SLT, Primary/Secondary specialist ITT Tutors and/or specialist school-based staff. This training includes:

  • Pre-commencement Conference
  • Four generic training sessions: Classroom Practice 1, 2 & 3 (focussing on Classroom & Behaviour Management/Inclusion/Planning & Assessment) and National Priorities with Preparation for first post
  • Classroom Practice Tasks
  • E-Portfolio
  • E-Safety
  • Locality Centre Tutorials or training. This includes guidance on classroom techniques, lesson planning and curriculum, alongside observing role models, discussing relevant research, attending short courses and practising ICT skills
  • Cultural Diversity
  • Assignment Writing

Secondary: Subject-Specific Programme

This is delivered by a subject specialist ITT Tutor and/or locality centre subject specialist.

  • Five face-to-face training days
  • Video conferencing sessions
  • Distance learning tasks

Primary: Subject/Phase Specific Programme

This is delivered by the SLT, phase specialist ITT Tutors and/or locality centre phase specialists

Trainees are assigned to a training venue, linked to a Locality Centre. These centres are designated training schools situated around England. Here, trainees will receive:

  • Five face-to-face training sessions based on the Primary Curriculum
  • Focus days dedicated to English, Maths and ICT
  • Distance learning tasks

Assessment:

All trainees:

  • Four monitoring visits from a phase or subject specialist tutor
  • Five online checks of the E-Portfolio to assess progress against QTS standards
  • Develop an E-Portfolio of evidence against the QTS standards
  • One written assignments with the option to develop this to gain Masters-level credits and two action research projects
  • National QTS Skills Tests in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT. NB. New regulations from the TDA stipulate that from September 2013 Trainees must complete and pass the required skills test prior to the start of the programme
  • Final assessment for QTS

Self-funded Trainees:

As above plus:

  • Self-funded trainees will receive an additional QA visit due to the 4 term programme
